Saturday, March 24 turned out to be a great day for the Spring Cutback at the Park of Roses. Despite a worrisome weather forecast earlier in the week, we were blessed with sun between the clouds.
A second blessing was the spectacular turn-out of volunteers! More than 50 people contributed their time and energy for this beautiful garden. We had regular volunteers, people from OSU, Girl Scouts, neighbors and Master Gardener interns. They were all people looking for a meaningful volunteer activity. They cut-back dead rose canes, talked, laughed and enjoyed snacks and beverages. The only full-time employee, Stephanie Williams, was thrilled with all the help. She “couldn’t believe how much got done!” One volunteer said “I walk here all the time. I am happy to give something back.”
As soon as the weather turns warmer, we will begin to see growth on the rose bushes. Come often and watch the progression of the plants until the first bloom. The hybrid roses generally bloom the first two weeks in June. However, the Heirloom Garden will put on a show in May. And, of course, the Herb and Perennial Gardens will have things happening before the roses bloom. Watch our Facebook page at Friends of the Park of Roses to keep up with the weekly changes in the garden.
Nice post, Karen! The web site is in good hands.
Thanks, Tina
