More than ever this winter, we can all use a ‘pick me up’! The Columbus Park of Roses witch hazel collection is just the ticket! The collection of 16 shrubs planted over the last several years have matured to a nice size. They are beginning to show off their spidery blooms in an array of bright, warm tones. And if you’re lucky, you’ll catch a whiff of their wonderful citrus fragrance.

This interesting shrub is almost maintenance free and grows best in full sun. However, as you can see, ours do well with some shade. Witch Hazel plants that bloom at this time of year are non-native cultivars.

The native Witch Hazel has yellow blooms in December! There is a large one just to the south of the walkway at the west end of the garden.

The collection is located on the north side of the Columbus Park of Roses — south of the service road and west of the Formal Rose Garden’s long mall.
